AI SEO and GEO: Get Found on Google and Cited by AI Answer Engines

SEO (search engine optimisation) helps your pages rank in Google and Bing. GEO (generative engine optimisation) helps AI answer engines such as Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Copilot and Gemini understand your business and cite it in their answers. Both rest on the same base: a fast, crawlable site with clear, accurate, well-structured content. We do both.

Definition

How SEO and GEO fit together

Search engines rank pages. AI answer engines read pages, combine what they find, and write an answer, often with links to the sources they used. To be one of those sources, a page first has to be crawlable and indexed, which is classic SEO. Then it has to state facts clearly enough to quote: who you are, what you do, where, to what standard, and for whom.

Google has said there is no special trick for its AI features: the same SEO fundamentals apply. In practice, pages cited by AI engines tend to answer the question near the top, use precise terms and named standards, carry structured data, and match what the rest of the web says about the business. That is the work.

The problem

Why good businesses stay invisible in search and AI answers

  • The site is slow or built so that crawlers cannot read the content, so pages never rank.
  • Pages describe the company in vague terms, so neither Google nor an AI model can tell what it does.
  • Business details differ between the website, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn and directories.
  • AI crawlers are blocked by accident in robots.txt or the firewall.
  • Nobody tracks AI visibility, so nobody knows whether ChatGPT names you or a competitor.

Methods

What makes it work

Technical SEO

Crawl and index control, canonical URLs, XML sitemaps, hreflang for English, Sinhala and Tamil pages, and Core Web Vitals (LCP, INP, CLS) fixed in code.

Structured data

Schema.org JSON-LD for Organization, LocalBusiness, Service, Product, FAQPage and BreadcrumbList, validated, so engines read facts rather than guess them.

Answer-first writing

A plain definition near the top, a quotable summary, named standards and specific terms, and FAQs that mirror real questions.

Entity consistency

One consistent set of facts across your site, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, Bing Places and trusted directories.

AI crawler access

Deliberate robots.txt rules for OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, PerplexityBot, Bingbot and Googlebot, and a separate decision on AI training crawlers such as GPTBot and Google-Extended.

AI visibility tracking

A fixed set of buyer prompts checked regularly across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews, plus AI referral traffic in GA4.

What we will not promise

  • Nobody can guarantee a number one ranking or a citation in ChatGPT. We commit to the work and to transparent measurement.
  • GEO does not replace SEO. A page that is not indexed will not be cited.
  • llms.txt is a proposed convention, not a standard that Google uses. We add it because it costs little, not because it is a ranking factor.
  • Google no longer shows FAQ rich results for most sites. We still use FAQ schema because it helps machines read the page, not for a rich snippet.
FAQ

AI SEO & GEO: common questions

What is GEO (generative engine optimisation)?

+

GEO is the practice of making your business easy for AI answer engines such as ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and Gemini to understand, trust and cite. It builds on SEO with clear facts, structured data, answer-first content and consistent information across the web.

Is GEO different from SEO?

+

It extends it. SEO gets your pages crawled, indexed and ranked. GEO makes those pages easy to quote and makes sure AI engines describe your business correctly. Without SEO, GEO has nothing to work with.

Are Google AI Overviews shown in Sri Lanka?

+

Yes. Google lists Sri Lanka among the countries where AI Overviews and AI Mode are available, so AI-written answers already appear above many local search results.

How do I get my business mentioned by ChatGPT?

+

Make sure ChatGPT's search crawler can reach your site, publish clear pages that state what you do, where and for whom, keep your details consistent across trusted sites, and earn mentions in sources AI engines read. No one can guarantee a mention, but these steps raise the odds.

Should I block AI crawlers?

+

Usually not the search crawlers, such as OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot, because blocking them removes you from those answers. Training crawlers such as GPTBot and Google-Extended are a separate business decision about whether your content may be used to train models. We set each rule on purpose.

How long does SEO take in Sri Lanka?

+

Technical fixes can show effect within weeks. Rankings for competitive terms and consistent AI citations usually take three to six months of steady work, depending on your site's starting point and competition.
